Junior Fellows Speakers Series
Yin-Zhe Ma, Physics and Astronomy, UBC
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) announced the discovery of a new particle in the search for the Higgs boson on 4th July,2012. The Higgs particle, aka “God particle” is the very massive particle existed in the very early Universe. The discovery is based on two big experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which has spanned many decades and has involved many experiments all over the world. In this talk, Yin-Zhe will lead the discussion of the following, intriguing and perhaps fundamental questions concerning about the nature of the Universe:
1. Why the Higgs particle is called “God particle”, how important it is?
2. How the Higgs particle helps to sharpen our understanding of the origin of the Universe?
3. What are the nature of Dark Matter and Dark Energy in our cosmic inventory?
4. How the very small and very large of the Cosmos link together?
The talk will be suitable for general audiences who are interested in such questions.
