Awards & Scholarships

Thank you for the generous support of the following Johannean benefactors who made it possible to establish the following fellowships and scholarships to eligible residents of St. John’s College who will be known as St. John’s Scholars.

St. John's College Charles C.C. Wong Memorial Fellowship:

Fellowships have been endowed by family and friends in memory of Charles C.C. Wong for students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies who are residents of St. John's College. Charles C.C. Wong graduated from St. John’s University in 1942 and served as President of St. John’s University Alumni Association Hong Kong from 1994 to 1995. He was a strong supporter and benefactor in the founding of SJC UBC.

St. John's College Sir Quo-Wei Lee Fellowship:

Fellowships have been endowed by Sir Quo-Wei for students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies who are residents of St. John's College. Sir Quo-Wei Lee, GBM, CBE, JP, has family roots in Kaiping, Guangdong, China, and is a famous businessman in Hong Kong. He served as the Executive Chairman of Hang Seng Bank and the Chancellor of Hang Seng School of Commerce. Lee was created Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1977, and made a Knight Bachelor in 1988. He was awarded a Grand Bauhinia Medal in 1997.

St. John's College Reginald and Annie Van Fellowship:

Fellowships have been endowed in honour of Reginald and Annie Van, founders of Kelly International Corporation Ltd. Kelly Group was founded in 1965, a privately held business entity headquartered in Taiwan that started with decorative home accessory export trading under the name Kelly International Corporation. Today, it has grown to a multinational group operating in six countries.

St. John's College George Shen Fellowship:

Fellowships have been endowed in honour of George Shen. Dr. Shen graduated from St. John’s University in 1949. He is the Chief Editor Emeritus of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, and worked closely with Robert C.F. Ho to establish SJC at UBC.

St. John's College Li Pai Lin Memorial Graduate Scholarship:

A scholarship has been endowed by Anita K.F. Li and family in memory of her husband, Li Pai Lin, who was an alumnus of St. John's University in Shanghai. Li Pai Lin was born in Canton, China, in 1930. He received his education at St. John’s University in Shanghai and the University of Hong Kong. He began his career in Hong Kong at the department of Public Works, served as Chief Building Inspector for the City of Calgary during Calgary’s boom years, and later formed his own building and structural engineering consulting practice.

Holia Chow Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship has been established in loving memory of Holia Hsing Chow (1922-2011), Alumna of St. John's University Shanghai, and beloved mother, grandmother and friend.


The total funding available for these awards is approximately $100,000.

Thesis Completion Scholarships
The intention of the Thesis Completion Scholarships is to enable accomplished graduate students at SJC to complete excellent theses.

Research Travel Scholarships
The intention of the Travel Scholarships is to assist accomplished graduate students who are residents of St. John’s College to undertake travel for a purpose directly related to their course of study.

Eligibility – Thesis Completion Scholarship

Applicants must:

  • be enrolled in a graduate degree program and engaged in the final stages of the completion of a graduate thesis
  • display a high level of academic achievement
  • have completed one full year of residential membership at St. John’s College (application can be made during the first year of membership)
  • expect to complete their degree during the academic year for which the award is made
  • maintain residence in the College during the term for which the award is made
  • only one Thesis Completion Scholarship will be granted to a student during a course of study at UBC [one per degree]
  • priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a St. John’s College Thesis Completion Scholarship

Eligibility – Travel Scholarships

Recipients must:

  • be enrolled in a graduate degree program
  • display a high level of academic achievement
  • have completed one academic term of residency at St. John’s College (application can be made during the first year of membership)
  • be undertaking travel for a purpose directly related to their course of study
  • after conclusion of the travel, recipients will deliver a presentation in the Resident Fellow Speaker Series, or, if not feasible, will submit a report on the travel for which the scholarship was used

Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a St. John’s College Travel Scholarship.

Application Instructions:

Residents may apply for either or both scholarship(s).

Applicants must submit:

1.    A letter of application detailing:
–  which award(s) is being applied for
–  what living at the College has meant to the applicant
–  the contributions they have made to the College
–  how the award will assist them during and/or in the completion of their course of study
  2. a budget, if applying for a travel scholarship
  3.     A letter of support from their supervisor speaking to the eligibility criteria for the specific awards being applied for

Adjudication Committee

  • The St. John’s College Principal
  • The St. John’s College Associate Principal(s)
  • The St. John’s College Assistant Principal(s)
  • A St. Jon’s College Faculty Fellow
  • Two Resident Fellows of the SJC Academic Committee who are not under consideration for an award
