“English Language Learning and the Construction of our Indentities”
Learning a language has a deep impact in the construction our identity, as in the postmodern world this happens in a continuous way, in a process which is never ended; and in which aspects related to our sense of belonging to several cultures, such as linguistic and national ones, intertwine to form our identity. As learners of English as a foreign or second language, our identities are thus influenced by a language which has become dominant in the world, and is associated with globalization, business, technology and international communication. In this talk, I will address the notion of English as an international language, or lingua franca, as well as its influence in the construction of our identities as non-native speakers of English.
